The Generation X Files

I’m not sure if I believe that we humans were created or evolved.

I think I could probably make just as good a case that we’re not from this planet at all! The soon to be released alien disclosure files might shed more light on that theory!

I don’t have the blind faith required for religion. I do have a pronounced tailbone and I’m in the so-called ‘monkey blood’ group….so that at least lines up with the ape ancestry!

I get the ‘theory’ of evolution. It makes sense that everything has adapted to find a place on this planet beyond the primordial ooze.

What I don’t buy is that humans are the pinnacle of that whole process. Really? We’re as good as it gets?

I mean I’ll give you, we’re the top of the food chain. But, only because we’ve got better weapons than the average predator (not the ones from the films. Their tech is obviously far superior!).

I’m just not convinced.

I can’t see where humans fit on this planet. What our purpose is in the grand scheme of things. Why it is that we evolved the way we did.

Why are we the only ones who have to reshape the Earth to suit us? Why are we so ill-equipped to survive on this planet if this is our ‘best’ selves?

Our most basic needs as humans are food and shelter. (And clothes of course…because the upgrade removed most of our fur along with our tails.)

In the early days, those needs (and our bits!) were covered by hunting animals and finding the most suitable environment to live in.

We’re in our billions now and even after all this time, those basic requirements haven’t changed.

Thankfully, we don’t have to hunt or gather anymore. Everything you could ever want (and a lot of things you don’t) is available at the touch of a button. It’s so easy!

Sure, a lot of the packaged food is now ultra-processed and stripped of any actual nutritional value….but, just think of the profits convenience.

There’s so much choice nowadays though isn’t there? Think about how much variety there is in the big supermarkets. With so many items there must be a lot of small businesses and farms making money from them.

Oh…I just checked and apparently the majority of those packaged foods and beverages are controlled by only 10 multi-national corporations. Weird.

Okay, let’s move on to the other essential – shelter. We’ve spread out all over this planet since we left the caves and campfires behind.

With so many of us it’s lucky there is so much land available for us to live on really. Ooh, hang on a sec, we need to do a little bit of maths first. There might not be as much as I thought…

The British Crown (King Charles III) owns 6.6 billion acres (approximately 16% of the Earth’s surface)

The Roman Catholic Church is estimated to own about 177 million acres.

Bill Gates is the largest private owner of farmland (another 250,000 acres give or take).

Other billionaires, such as rancher Stan Kroenke, own significant land, with some owning millions of acres.

Right, let’s just stop there shall we! That seems like a lot. Considering 70% of our planet is water, that doesn’t leave much does it? I’m not great at maths but even so….

It’s not all about owning land of course. We also need accommodation.

In 2026 there are a wide variety of housing options available. From van-life and tiny homes right up to Castles on vast estates.

It’s such a shame though that in the 21st century, we still don’t have enough housing to accommodate us all…I think… Dare I check? Hang on…..

Sooooo….turns out in many developed nations and on a global scale, there are significantly more empty houses than homeless people. But how can that be? I thought we were told the solution was to build more housing? That can’t be right.

You know it kinda blows my mind thinking about things like this.

It makes me laugh that as humans, we just decided we basically own the planet? That it’s ours to carve up and sell back off to each other.

And the rest of us just somehow accept that the Earth – this planet that we all live on – can belong to any of us and not to all of us.

We’ve made entire species extinct in order to accommodate our expansion. We’re destroying the planet that sustains us as we plunder it for resources.

I can’t think of any other organism as harmful to this planet as we are on such a massive scale.

This doesn’t feel like the peak of anything…neither evolution nor civilisation.

It’s ridiculous when I think about it. I think I’d have preferred not to have evolved at all.

Given the option, I’d have kept the fur and tail instead! Would have made it easier to swing through the coconut trees with Citizen Tarzan!
