In The Summertime

2–3 minutes

All bets are off in the summer!

That’s probably the simplest way to explain my absence for the last couple of months.

There’s just something about this season that brings out my inner child – the one who couldn’t wait for the school term to end and the magical “summer holidays” to begin. Those precious months dedicated to cramming in as much fun as possible, every single day.

I’m a classic “summer child” – which might explain why I always try to look on the brighter side of life. The truth is, that gets a little harder every year. It’s increasingly difficult to look at global events and keep a “sunny” disposition.

Usually, I combat this by spending the summer recharging my internal solar battery. This year, I’ve been pulled under by a relentless tide of heatwaves, each one crashing over me before I can catch my breath!

It’s been too hot to do… well, almost everything!

Anyway, here we are in September already. The summer is fading – along with my tan and my tolerance for the mainstream narrative – and months have gone by since I last wrote a post.

I’ve also fallen behind with my reading on here and I sincerely apologise for that. Now that my brain can concentrate on more than just keeping me from spontaneously combusting, I’m ready to get back on track.

As much as my inner child mourns the end of the summer holidays, part of me is secretly craving the structure of autumn. I am ready for stew instead of salad, drinking hot coffee undiluted by ice and, more importantly, a return to writing.

It’s not like my work here is done. Before my summer absenteeism, I was on a roll! But my views and likes were down. I’m not sure if it was because I introduced a new format – which included my Citizen Jane Field Guide™️ – or if the shadow bans are finally catching up to me. Or, just maybe, you simply went AWOL for the summer too.

Either way, I’m glad to be back. As a Scot, my genetic blueprint is strictly designed for drizzle, overcast skies and temperatures that top out at a dizzying 18°C.

Swapping that for a country with a climate where the summer sun feels like my personal Nemesis has been… character-building. My inner child might love the sunshine, but my Scottish skin has spent the last two months begging for mercy.

Now, the air is cooling down and the keyboard is calling.

Before the heat melted my focus, I was having a blast with you all. I’ve missed this community and I’m itching to know how you’re all doing.

I’ve got my hot coffee ready, but first, I need you to vote on the fate of this blog. Give it to me straight:

  • Do we keep the Citizen Jane Field Guide™️?
  • Or do we launch it into the sun?

Drop a KEEP or BIN in the comments – and tell me how you survived the summer while you’re at it!

I’ve missed you!

Citizen Jane x ✌️

  1. I think you should go with your gut on whether to keep it or bin it. You know what you want most. Go with that.

Here in Wyoming, USA, it was also too hot. I didn’t get in as much gardening as I would like. But I also didn’t feel much like writing. Jewelry making occupied most of my time.

I’m so glad that we are a day past the equinox. The days are getting shorter and I made a big pot of chili the other day. So happy for cooler weather.

Glad you are back to writing and thanks for the like!

    1. I still haven’t decided!

Yes, the heat kept me indoors for most of the summer! I’m glad you were at least able to continue making your jewellery.

Ooh chilli! Yes! I’m going to experiment with my Moroccan tagine this weekend. I’m nervously excited haha.

Thank you and you’re welcome. I always enjoy your posts.

Sorry for the delay, my life seems to be running on twice the speed at the moment and I’m constantly running to catch up!

Have a great weekend and thanks for dropping by 🙂

  2. It’s great to see you back! Sorry it took me so damn long to respond! We are down to two puppies…over 50 pounds each at 19 weeks. We are keeping Cosmo…the other is named Electric lol…and Electric we think is deaf. We have a few people wanting him…one problem…we have fallen for him and will probably end up keeping him as well…God help us lol.
I love summer as well…but I’m ready for fall! This week it’s going to be in the low 80s dropping from the mid 90s so it’s finally here at last.

    1. Thank you, it’s great to be back (I think lol)!
Don’t worry, I know you have a hectic life and it’s just always nice to hear from you when you have time. 😊
I remember that you were keeping Cosmo but gosh, another pup too! I can see why you’d want to keep him though. With Martha and the rest of the pets you must have quite the house-full!
Apparently, the summer isn’t quite done with us yet and the sun is going to show us its teeth again at the end of the week! Oh well, saves me having to look out the warmer clothes for another week I guess!
      Thanks for the pupdate! 🐕🐕
      Have a great week!

Hope you and Sasha are doing well too.
I’m spending this week catching up with my WP and looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to.
The sun has defeated me this summer and I was genuinely scared the extra heat from my laptop would be the catalyst for spontaneous human combustion!

  6. Good to see you blogging again. I’m a bit like you as far as this summers temperatures, half of my DNA is from the Baltic region. Just been keeping on socialising, going to see live music, drinking beer, and avoiding watching or listening to what passes as news.

  8. I for one am delighted you’re back. I love your non-indulgent straight from the hip dialogue which is always informative with up to date info and concerns shared by many. You give options on how to handle each situation if interested, and constructive criticism. It’s always delivered with aplomb and eye opening. Do as you love citizen Jane, you are well received and thought provoking. Always and forever a fan. Cn
