“Let’s eat Grandma!”
That’s a terrifying phrase to read. One that conjures up images of a family dinner turning into a horror film or something from the imagination of the brothers Grimm.
But, if you insert a single comma after the word eat, the entire meaning completely transforms: “Let’s eat, Grandma!”. Now, it’s just a nice, normal invitation to dig into lunch.
With that tiny shift in structure, we go from it reading like a criminal act to a family enjoying a Sunday roast together.
There’s an upcoming WordPress daily prompt this week that caught my eye: “What’s a common misconception people have about happiness?”. It got me thinking. It’s a little like my joke at the start; it depends how you interpret it.
For me, happiness isn’t a constant state of being, it’s found in fleeting moments. It’s just a brief, beautiful punctuation mark. It’s a comma or an exclamation mark that changes an otherwise unremarkable day.
I. The Corporate Subscription Model 🧘♀️📉
The modern wellness machine doesn’t want you interpreting happiness as a fleeting punctuation mark. There’s no money to be made in letting you be content with a normal, neutral baseline.
Instead, they’ve successfully re-interpreted our lives to turn emotional stability into a commercial subscription model. We’re surrounded by workplace wellness initiatives and self-help manuals.
The algorithmic feeds treat a standard human day (where you just sit on a bus, stare out a rainy window and merely exist) as an error.
They treat your mind like an outdated piece of software that requires constant updating. They convince younger generations that if they aren’t waking up every morning vibrating with pure, unadulterated euphoria, their system is glitching.
And conveniently, they have the exact premium upgrade you need to buy to fix it – whether it’s a mindfulness tracker, a subscription app, or a special pair of organic linen trousers.
By turning an occasional emotion into an ongoing chore, society has created an unbearable level of performance anxiety. Chasing a permanent high is quite literally fighting against human biology.
Science confirms that our brains process joy through temporary dopamine spikes designed by evolution to be short-lived. If you were happy 100% of the time, you’d be a clinical anomaly.
II. The Algorithmic Meltdown 📉📱
This structural expectation of forced optimism is actively destroying the mental health of an entire generation, setting them up for absolute failure.
Younger people are the very first guinea pigs raised entirely within a digital panopticon. They aren’t just comparing themselves to the cool kids at school anymore; they’re comparing their raw, unedited, behind-the-scenes reality to a global, 24/7 scrolling loop of hyper-curated, flawless success. They have been duped into believing that normal neutrality or quiet boredom equals failure.
The Reality Dossier: The Happiness Deficit
The comprehensive World Happiness Report revealed that life satisfaction among individuals under the age of 25 in Western and English-speaking nations has dropped dramatically over the past decade. Independent data published by the Oxford University Wellbeing Research Centre directly correlates heavy, passive social media consumption with this unprecedented drop in youth well-being. Furthermore, clinical research highlighted by prominent psychologists notes that replacing a play-based reality with a phone-based existence has structurally broken the youth’s ability to tolerate normal, neutral human emotion.
They’re profoundly unhappy because they’ve been taught that being anything less than ecstatic means they’re somehow defective. They haven’t been shown that life is mostly comprised of mundane, quiet spaces – and that there’s peace in that neutrality.
III. The Defiant Belly Laugh 🛡️🎭
For me, real joy can never be found in a corporate app or a curated life plan. It’s found in the simple, messy cracks in between the everyday grind.
It’s a catch-up with friends where you completely lose track of time. It’s watching wildlife in your garden until your forgotten coffee gets cold. It’s a proper, uncontrollable belly laugh that leaves your cheeks aching and your life a little brighter.
That’s exactly why I choose a genuine laugh over a fake smile. Why my gallows humour isn’t a sign of defeat; it’s the ultimate form of human defiance.
Making someone laugh doesn’t fix a systemic global crisis, but it inserts a temporary comma into the stress. It proves they haven’t managed to crush our human spirit entirely.
IV. The Citizen Jane Field Guide™️ (The Joy Subversion) 🧠✊
Stop trying to reach eternal enlightenment. It doesn’t exist. The lifestyle gurus are faking it and the subscription fees are ridiculous. Use this operational blueprint to reclaim your right to be a regular, beautifully flawed human.

[ ] Drop the Happiness Obligation: Treat your low or neutral days as completely standard human settings. You do not need to “fix” a day just because it was quiet. Neutrality is the human baseline. ☕
[ ] Hunt the Micro-Moments: Reframe your daily metrics to celebrate the fleeting sparks – a brilliant cup of tea, a perfect song on the radio, or a shared moment with a mate. 🎯
[ ] Sabotage with Humour: When the world gets entirely grim, find a sharp, cynical joke to share. Laughing at a dark reality doesn’t mean you don’t care; it means you refuse to let the situation control your mind. 💀
[ ] Share the Trenches: Stop trying to present a perfect, “blessed” front to the people you love. Share the mess. A genuine, vulnerable laugh over a shared everyday disaster is worth more than a thousand curated photos. 🤝
