Love Will Tear Us Apart

6–9 minutes

BRRRR-RIIIING! BRRRR-RIIIING! BRRRR-RIIIING!📞💥

That loud, piercing, (un-ignorable) mechanical bell of the family hallway landline was the soundtrack to our youth. And in my house, whenever it rang, it was a race to see who could get to it first…

Nine times out of ten, my mum won! If you’ve read my post, The Boy In The Bubble, you’ll know my mum was quick on her feet when mischief was afoot!

Picture the scene: a teenage boy plucks up the courage to dial the number, heart hammering, palms sweating. My mum picks up the heavy plastic receiver. The boy clears his throat and nervously asks if he can speak to “Citizen Jane”.

My mum, a gleeful glint in her eye, settles in for a chat. Because technically… he is speaking to “Citizen Jane”. My mum and I share the same first name (well, sort of… it’s a long story!). 🕵️‍♀️

Before I could wrestle the phone from her mum-fu™️ grip, she would subject the bewildered boy to a full-blown interrogation! It left the poor lad confused and my face flushed with the glow of teenage mortification! But somehow, even after all that, some of them were still brave enough to ask me out on a date!

It was a time filled with hopeful anticipation and stomach-butterflies. Not to mention the gut-churning terror of being “stood up” at the local cinema or under the big clock at the station! There was no WhatsApp to send a last-minute “Sorry… running late x” message.

If they didn’t show, you stood there (perhaps in the rain because this was Scotland!), feeling like an idiot. But you know what? We still turned up. We took the risk. Because the reward (a real, human connection) was worth the gamble. ☔

Now, in 2026, the landline is redundant and the ringing hallway phone is a distant memory. We’re glued to our smartphones instead.

And that’s where the Syndicate stepped in (as it always does) whispering through algorithms and outrage to achieve their ultimate masterpiece: dealing technological ammunition to both sides in the escalating Battle of the Sexes…

I. The Divide and Conquer Protocol 💔🤖

As Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close, I’m still not sold on this year’s slogan, “More Good Days, Together”. I mean, it’s a nice idea but it seems increasingly… unachievable.

Especially when you consider the very system broadcasting that slogan is actively tweaking the code to actually keep us divided. They give us a target of togetherness while programming the apps to ensure we remain apart!

We need to talk about the most sophisticated psychological operation currently running on our screens. The Syndicate understands that by destroying the relationship between men and women, they effectively fracture the most foundational unit of human survival.

They don’t want us partnering up, comforting each other, or building resilient families. They want us single, lonely, fearful of each other… and perfectly primed for a lifetime of digital dependency.

How do they do it? By algorithmic segregation. Your phone’s “For You” page is actively engineering a war between the sexes. The code feeds completely different, toxic content to young men and young women, pushing them into opposing digital trenches:

  • The “Red Pill” Pipeline: Young men are targeted with aggressive “Sigma Male” and alpha-influencer content. They are told that modern society has marginalised them and that true strength means rejecting vulnerability. They’re encouraged to view relationships as zero-sum power struggles where they must dominate or be exploited.
  • The Toxic Masculinity Loop: Simultaneously, young women are fed hyper-defensive, rage-bait videos declaring that all men are inherently dangerous, low-value and incapable of emotional intelligence.
  • The Echo Chamber Effect: Both sexes are being taught (by automated algorithms) to view the opposite gender not as potential partners, friends, or teammates, but as hostile foes.

II. The Statistical Divide 📊📉

This isn’t just a cynical Gen X observation. The cold, hard data shows that the Syndicate’s gender-dividing protocol is working… flawlessly.

Recent sociological data compiled in the Financial Times New Global Gender Divide Study reveals a historic political and ideological divergence. In the UK and the US, young women under 30 have shifted significantly more progressive, while young men of the same age bracket are trending noticeably conservative.

According to data within the official Gallup World Happiness Report, this unprecedented ideological chasm directly correlates with a steep decline in interpersonal trust, a drop in real-world, social meeting frequency and a corresponding spike in youth anxiety and depression.

We are watching a generation physically drift apart. We sit on our sofas, scrolling through (heavily edited) “dating coaches” who profit off our mutual resentment. Meanwhile, the actual human beings right outside our windows are just as terrified, lonely and desperate for connection as we are!

We’ve been tricked into trading the vulnerable, butterflies-in-the-stomach-inducing excitement of old-school courtship for algorithm-engineered polarisation. Unwitting participants in a standoff designed by algorithms… that profit every time a man and woman view the opposite sex as the enemy.

III. The Citizen Jane Field Guide™️ (The Ceasefire) 🏳️❤️

We don’t fix modern relationships by downloading another dating app or watching another “Alpha Male” or “Femcel” podcast. We do it by calling a truce in the gender war!

  • [ ] The Algorithm Purge: Next time a video pops up telling you What Women Secretly Want or Why Men Are Toxic, stop. Don’t click. Don’t comment. Hit “Not Interested”. Resist their algorithmically-curated rage-bait. The Syndicate’s war-engine is fuelled by our energy. 📱🛑
  • [ ] The Reality Check Chat: Grab a cup of tea or a pint and have a proper sit-down with a friend or family member. Ask them to share what their digital world looks like. You’ll quickly realise that folks across the board are just as drained and burned out by modern online communication as you are. ☕🍻
  • [ ] The Old-School Date Invite: Skip the mind games. Forget the three-day rule or the calculated delays. If you like someone, be direct and ask them out. Honesty is the ultimate shortcut to real connection. Bring back the butterflies! 🦋🎯
  • [ ] The Ghostbuster Protocol: If a date doesn’t work out, don’t just vanish into the digital ether like a phantom. Send a brief, polite text: “Great to meet you, but I didn’t feel a spark. All the best”. Treat others the way you want to be treated. 👻🚫
  • [ ] The Analog Date Protocol: Go on a date where phones are completely banned from the table. No taking photos of the food for the ‘gram. No checking notifications. Just look each other in the eye, navigate the awkward silences and rediscover the lost art of conversation. 🍽️📵

Join the Rebellion: It’s Parley Time! ✊👇

Your Mission: The field guide above only works if we can step out from the digital trenches and start talking (and listening) to each other again. I’ve said more than enough already and now, I’d like to hear from you. How do you suggest we have More Good Days, Together? Let’s keep talking in the comments below 👇

Optional “Side Quest“: Younger rebels, find an older family member or friend and ask them to share their most hilarious, beautifully clumsy story of old-school, pre-smartphone romance. Older rebels, share your best piece of advice for navigating a real-world courtship without an app!

The Syndicate is trying to convince us that love is just a high-risk transaction where being emotionally distant means you somehow “win”. They want us hyper-vigilant, suspicious and locked inside our digital fortresses…alone.

But it’s not too late to change things. To reach out to each other and make real human connections again. In all their messy glory. The sweaty palms. The risk of getting your heart broken. Turning up to the station clock… even when you’re terrified they won’t be there.

Let’s make the matrix glitch again. Turn off the dating coaches, delete the rage-bait feeds or better still, put down our smartphones for a while. Wouldn’t it be nice to look each other in the eye again? Exchange a friendly smile. Across a room, not a screen….
