The Sound of Silence

5–7 minutes

Ah, Sundays…

Even now, (around 40 years later…yikes!) I can still smell the steam from my mum’s iron hitting my school shirt while Dr. David Banner* walked down that lonely road on the telly. (*I know… Dr. Robert Bruce Banner in the comics!)

If you’re a Brit of a certain vintage, you might remember the feeling… That theme tune for The Incredible Hulk was the funeral march for the weekend (usually followed by the post-bath-damp-hair-and-pyjamas dread of Songs of Praise or the Antiques Roadshow theme tune). It was the “Handover” from freedom back to the system.

Back then, we at least had a boundary. We had a window of free time before it slammed shut.

In 2026, the Syndicate has demolished the wall between “living” and “labouring”. We’ve gone from the Sunday night blues to an eternal, 24/7 grindstone.

We’ve industrialised childhood with childcare systems that start almost from birth and pushed retirement ages ever higher across the globe1.

Have we really reached a point where “unproductive” time is only permitted when you’re literally too small to hold a tool or, too old to remember where you put it?!

I spent 15 minutes yesterday afternoon watching an eagle soaring on the mountain thermals.

I wasn’t “mindfully observing” it. I wasn’t recording it for a nature vlog. I certainly wasn’t “optimising my downtime”. I was just… watching a bird.

And then, a strange thing happened. I started to feel almost… guilty about it…

And I realised, that guilt is a pre-programmed feature, not a bug. It’s the voiceless rebuke of the Syndicate in my head telling me that an unproductive minute is a wasted one!

Why does watching a bird feel like a crime against the clock? Because the Syndicate has successfully turned our rest into a resource…

I. The Efficiency Mandate: The 24/7 Factory 📈

The Syndicate has turned our own brains into a factory that never stops. They’ve issued what I call “The Efficiency Mandate”. It’s the rebranding of “rest” as “recovery time” – as if your body is just a piece of hardware that needs to be plugged in and charged so it can get back to work…

We have apps that track our sleep and wearables that buzz if (heaven forbid!) our “unproductive thought levels” get too high.

We’ve outsourced our joy to a spreadsheet. Even our hobbies have to be “results-oriented”. We don’t just bake a cake; we have to photograph it, tag it and measure its “engagement”. We’re hacking our own happiness to gain an upward spike on a graph.

II. The Glitch: The Always-On Brain 🔛

The problem is that a brain under constant pressure to “produce”, eventually just fries its own circuits! We’re seeing a global spike in “Cognitive Burnout“. Data shows that by trying to do everything at 110%, we may actually be causing changes in our brain structure.

I’m the first to admit I’ve been sucked into this. I’m writing this blog in the gaps between the “day job” because I don’t really have an off-switch. But… that’s exactly why we need the Resistance. We have to fight the urge to be “productive” like we’re fighting a fever!

The Syndicate loves a tired brain. A tired brain is suggestible. A tired brain buys the “Premium Subscription” to a meditation app or a streaming service instead of just… turning the phone off. They’re keeping us exhausted while they sell us their “cure”.

III. The Social Recession of Stillness ☮️

We’re losing the art of just being… at peace. For a Scottish Gen Xer, our childhood was 20% staring out of a rainy window and 80% making up games and having fun with our mates. We were the Masters of Boredom.

Now, the five minutes spent waiting for a train has to be filled by “scrolling the feed”. That “busy-ness” is a social wall. When you’re staring at a screen, you’re not part of the world around you.

But when you’re just… there, standing in that space, you’re available for an unscripted, human moment. Every minute you spend being “useless” is a minute you aren’t feeding the Syndicate’s data-beast. Reclaiming your boredom isn’t just self-care… it’s a necessary act of rebellion. ✊

The Citizen Jane Field Guide™️ (The Quiet Rebellion) ✊✌️

The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week (11 – 17 May 2026) is “Action”.

My proposed action? Tactical Inactivity™️.

Let’s reclaim our right to have truly “free” time:

1. The “Hulk” Handover: Tonight, when that “Sunday Night Blues” feeling hits, (the one that used to smell like school-shirt steam and scorched polyester) refuse the handoff. Instead of prepping for Monday’s grind, do something completely “un-optimised” and fun. Dig out an old board game. Listen to an album you haven’t heard in years. Or, even better, have a “Sunday Sundae” with waaaaay too many toppings! Remind your brain that life is for living, not just existing… in between shifts! 🍨🎲

2. The “Pigeon Protocol”: Find a bird. It doesn’t have to be an eagle – it can be a pigeon, a crow, even a particularly determined seagull (depending where you live). Watch it until it flies away. Don’t photograph it. Don’t “identify” it with an app. Just witness it (and its absolute lack of concern for the global economy!). 🐦

3. The “Notification Strike”: You aren’t a Tamagotchi; you don’t need a digital biscuit to exist. If an app tells you that you haven’t “met your goal”, delete the goal! If your watch tells you to “stand up”, stay sitting down out of pure, tactical spite! Or better yet, delete them all! It’s your life, not theirs. 🍪

4. The “Analogue Anchor”: Buy a physical magazine or book. No hyperlinks, no “Related Content”. Just one story, at one speed, with no “Share” button. Take your time. Don’t rush it. 📖 ⚓

5. The “Busybody-Buster”: Next time someone sarcastically asks if you’re “keeping busy”, look them dead in the eye and say: “Nope, I’m being gloriously idle”. Watch their brain glitch (and eye twitch). It’s fun! 😈😛

Join the Rebellion ✊✌️

The Syndicate wants you “Always On” because a busy person never stops to ask: “Why (the f) am I doing this?!”.

Your mission: Reclaim (at least) ten minutes of your day for a task that provides absolutely no value to the global economy. Be inconveniently still. Starve the machine. Do something for you.

What’s the most “useless” thing you’ve done this week just because you wanted to? Let’s share our Downtime Wins in the comments 👏👇

Citizen Jane x ✌️

p.s. Happy Mother’s Day to my readers in Canada, America and Mexico! Today is the perfect day to put your feet up and have some “me time”! 💐🍫

  1. Childcare: On average, OECD data shows that 55% of children in studies starting ECEC (Early Childhood Education and Care) before age 3, with many entering in their first year of life.
Retirement: According to the OECD Pensions at a Glance 2025 report, populations are aging so quickly that countries must increase effective retirement ages to sustain pension systems ↩︎

I love S&G, they have a great vocal range. I think I like watching squirrels is an interesting thing to do, if you have time… (and you do!!)

    1. Me too! I was listening to Gracelands the other day and jigging about…. it’s impossible not to dance when I hear it!
Ah yes…. watching squirrels… I’ve spent many hours doing that. 🐿❤

  3. I can relate. I’m a Gen X person myself…born in 1967. I would not trade the time I grew up in for now…for any amount of money. We used our imagination! We had better people skills because we actually talked to each other and not texted.

I’m an IT Director, so I’m on call 24/7. When I get time…I know how to waste it on something I love. Tonight, there are some more Titanic docs and books to read. You brought up the Hulk theme. In America…it was Friday nights, along with The Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas…that was one of my favorite nights of watching television. That music to that is haunting, and I love it.

    Wonderful Post, Jane!

    1. Hey you! Thanks for coming across, it’s great to have you here!
And subscribed as well… wow! Thank you 🙂
Yeah I’d hate to be a youngster nowadays! No attention span, no social skills and no hope for the future!

I think the thing that gets me the most is that everything is sold to us as “convenience” to save us time… and yet I’ve never had less “free time”…

Could rant about this for hours. Lol instead I’ll just say thanks again, glad you enjoyed the post and yay for subscribing.

You’re most welcome. Pull up a chair and get comfy 🙃✋✌

      1. Oh I am more busy now than I was as a 20 year old. I would like to get a job at something I can leave when I clock out.
Kids know how to do something but they don’t know how it got to that point…sometimes that is important. Things are just TOO convenient.
Thank you for visiting me in the first place. I don’t get out of my blog as much as I should (that time thing again) and I meet people on my blog and follow from there.
        I sure will!

      2. And now you’ve got a pile of puppers to look after too!

Yes, you’re right. It’s like I said in one of my posts about how schools are taking analogue clocks down in exam rooms. Rather than teach children how to read the time on the clock, they’re just replacing them with a digital version🤦‍♀️
        I dunno, maybe I’m just getting old…
I think I found your blog through a recently pressed on your first Prisoner post. I didn’t really watch it but was aware of it so clicked on your post. By your 3rd post about it, I was on YouTube looking for episodes!
Like your Titanic posts… incredible! So interesting and full of real human stories… not given the Hollywood treatment.
I’m glad I found your site!
Hope Martha and the (penned fellas?) puppers are doing well 🐶🤗

      3. But there is more! We have a prairie dog named Rudy. A friend of the family just got two prairie dogs and she all of a sudden said she was giving one to us. I thought…oh the timing! I just can’t refuse it. My wife just said…ok…we have to cap this at some point lol…I agreed. We are keeping one of the puppies and the new prairie dog.

That is so crazy about the clocks. When my son was in elementry school…they stopped teaching cursive writing…they changed their minds because they brought it back in high school.

Oh yes! That first Prisoner post…all of a sudden it was booming….and then I found out it was on Freshly Pressed….I had not idea.

Thank you…I’m in mid-passion with Titanic. I don’t know how many to do before I stop it for a while. It’s not like the Prisoner where it has an end.
Martha and her puppies are doing great. No they don’t need a pen yet…but it’s coming soon. Martha keeps them with her in one place.

      4. OMG… I had to Google to see what prairie dogs look like and… now I want one lol! They’re so cute!

That’s crazy getting rid of cursive… glad they brought it back.

I’m so glad you were on Freshly Pressed because I’ve found a few great blogs, like yours, that way!

I’m enjoying your Titanic series so much I’d read them for a long while!
Glad mum and pups doing well. (My penned fellas was an attempt at Martha and the Vandellas… I was tired and it seemed funny at the time 🤦‍♀️😅)

      5. Oh they are one of the cutest animals I’ve ever seen. Also they are very intelligent…they “talk” to each other and sceintists have said they one of the largest vocabularies of all animals besides humans. They are very social…so that is why we are getting him a mate.

I never heard of Freshly Pressed until that moment. I started to get views everyday on it…and then they sent me an email congratulating me… I’ve very grateful to them picking mine.

Martha and the Vandellas…THAT is perfect! It fits as well…she was named after a song…the Beatles Martha My Dear. My son named her.

Thanks so much for reading them…and that is my goal…not views or likes…but people finding more information about it…and most of all…comments! They are open to everyone. The only thing I ask people is to stay off modern politics…for obvious reasons lol.
How long have you been blogging Jane? I haven’t explored your site yet…but Star Wars and animals…can’t go wrong with those two!
Oh gosh…I sometimes comment WAY too much…just tell me “enough Max” when I do.

      6. I had no idea! Thank you, I seem to learn something from you every time we chat lol! So they’re not only adorable, they’re clever too! Now I definitely want one!

That’s cool that it brought you a boost. I always give it a quick glance to see if any titles jump out and yours did. I rather shoot myself in the foot choosing song and album titles for my posts… not very SEO friendly but I’m not here to make the algorithms happy!

I thought I remembered reading that about your son naming Martha. That’s why I was trying to come up with something different (& I’m a sucker for Motown!) but my brain wasn’t up to the challenge last night 😅

And I agree, doing this for likes is cool and all but… if you can spark the interest of just ONE person to read more on their own or start a convo in the comments… wow, that IS something.
I started blogging in November because I was sick of fleeting exchanges on social media and wanted to make lasting connections with people and just… talk. Like people used to. Before life got so… complicated and full of rules I don’t understand.
And I likewise comment too much I think but I promise you, on my site, there’s no such thing! My posts are just an excuse for a chat! 😉

        Liked by 2 people

      7. An excuse to chat…that is the best way I’ve ever heard it said. I know some bloggers turn the comments off…I’m like…what is the point in that?
Don’t get me wrong…I don’t want people just to comment because they feel they have to….but whats the point in posting if you can’t talk?

I love Motown and Stax…they are always on my list. I got a kick out of you saying that about songs and albums. Yea…thats what I do and I DO feel like that at times. That is one of the reasons I’m hanging on to the Titanic and The Prisoner. Something different.

You just said something that is so true. “Like people used to.” On other social media like Facebook, X, or Youtube…there will be jerks that sound like they have no life…and just start arguments. That is why I like WordPress. I never met a rule I didn’t want to break lol…

      8. Yeah I couldn’t have comments off… what would be the point? I consider myself incredibly lucky that my comments are always so thought provoking and interesting! It’s my favourite part of my blog.

I just want to provide a space for people to share their thoughts and chill for a while. I try to choose songs that mean something to me but also link to my themes. Like a soundtrack to my thoughts…

I just can’t do social media anymore. I was on X for about 11 years and finally quit this year after too many scammers & creepy DM’s from thirsty singles. Even though I am not single… And my avatar was me in the Vader costume… with the helmet on!? Again, not super-bright to quit all social media just as you start blogging! But hey, I’m here for a good time, not an easy time… I’m Gen X! 😉

      9. Always thought provoking! I agree! Thats how I want my comment section to be…where sometimes my commenters start talking to other commenters and it goes on and on. I learn so much by listening to them…about older music that I missed.
I try to pick songs that are new/old songs. I just like the 20th Century sound more for songs. I always liked older music.
Thats the whole goal of this…have a good time!
Yea those other platforms have gotten toxic to me. WordPress doesn’t have many jerks…I’ve only ran into a couple in the 8 years I’ve been doing this.

      10. Your comments section is really interesting! Honestly, I probably spend as much time reading the comments sections as I do reading posts.
Yup, I agree. I never thought I’d be one of those “music today…” people, but here we are!
And yes, if it’s not fun then really, what’s the point? I don’t think any of us need any more negativity in our lives! There’s already plenty of that about today… sadly…

      11. I have some interesting people that follow me…I learn more from them than they do from me. Yes there is too much negativity. I get on WP to get away from it.

Oh we are doing good on the puppies! Hopefully I can do a post soon.

  4. oh my God, Jane, I am so there. As in guilty. I know I spent far too much time in front of my typewriter in front of the screen. And you’re right, I think brain fog is literally the brain asking for timeout, can we stop now, because I know my brain doesn’t ever want to stop. I’m constantly thinking about things to write what to write, whether I should write the poem the story it goes on, and on. I’m always pleased when I have an interruption, and my brain actually stops for a moment.Because I’m doing something else.I’m with someone else, so thank you for this beautiful and timely reminder. And I will partake of this , after I finish writing today or maybe tomorrow we’ll see depends on what my brain wants lol
