Reasons To Be Cheerful (pt.3)

2–3 minutes

There appears to be a distinct lack of festive cheer, or any other kind, around at the moment.

It could just be the algorithms force-feeding negativity into my timelines but it seems everyone’s feeling the pinch at the end of this year.

Not just in a financial sense either. I honestly feel like this has been a year of ramped-up division in so many ways.

Didn’t we all used to get along better? Is that another reason so many people want to go back to living in the 90’s? Maybe life was actually better then.

I don’t know, it’s hard to remember life back in the BC* times? (*Before Computers)

Nowadays we use them for just about everything. I remember being excited to receive my first text message…now we have tiny super-computers that fit in our palms!

I don’t like what ‘smartphones’ do to people. I hate how much focus they take away from our surroundings. It worries me that as technology advances, our species is willingly dumbing down.

We’ve reached a point where it’s getting harder to tell if you’re even speaking to an actual human sometimes. My fears for AI extend well beyond it being used to replace jobs. I’m scared it will replace us!

I feel like a lifetime’s-worth of events have happened during this year. I’m a little stunned and haven’t had time to catch up with it all yet. I think maybe that’s why it’s extra hard to feel ‘Christmassy’ this year.

I’ve had a weird sort of ‘time’s running out’ feeling where the festive ones should be.

Maybe that’s why I needed to know I’m not the only one who’s a little freaked out. Since starting my blog I’ve learned I’m far from alone! If anything maybe I’m not quite worried enough!

It’s funny but there’s a strange sort of comfort in that. Just in knowing that we can still make real connections with each other. That we’re having one right now as you’re reading my words.

It’s something I don’t think AI will ever be able to mimic or replace.

At least that’s one reason to be cheerful!

  1. looking back, I have to agree.for some of the same reasons and others. Everyone in my family had financial obligations one travelling to Thailand, another saving for their upcoming wedding, another bought a home and another moved for a job. Everyone was eirher relocated or funding impaired. I went ahead nonetheless and honestly gifts ordered weeks in advance didn’t arrive until jan 5th and as late as Feb 15. What a nightmare of ridiculousness. As a result i didnt have the joi de vive i usually greeted the holidays with and decorated perfunctorally instead of with enthusiasm. I know this is late but im working backward through your delightful and greatly appreciated posts.

    1. It already feels like it was about a year ago to me! Hopefully you’ll make up for it next Christmas!
